Saturday 29 May.

Sponsored by Awlcraft Marine Paint and Auckland City Promotions, the Sailor

the sport.
Themed around the America’s Cup, this year’s gala dinner will be an
unforgettable evening of yachting action & anecdotes. Jobson’s presentation
will be accompanied by an AV presentation of TV’s yachting highlights from
around the world.

racing experience, including tactician on Courageous, Ted Turner’s
victorious 1977 America’s Cup defence. He is also a successful author and
producer / broadcaster, and has hosted his own show on US sports
broadcasting giant ESPN since 1985.

MC Peter Montgomery is NZ’s own sports broadcasting supremo and the voice of
yachting in New Zealand.

The winner of the Sailor of the Year Award will be announced during the
evening, and presented with the
Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy.

Finalists are:
*Sharon Ferris; Europe sailor (Bay of Islands Yacht Club)
*Barbara Kendall; women’s boardsailing world champion & NZ Sportswoman of

Honour & Cruising Awards and an Award of Merit.

Says Adrienne Greenwood, YNZ chief executive “Awlcraft’s generous
sponsorship means we can hold these awards in a style that mirrors the
outstanding achievements of our finalists,” she says.

“It’s our way of giving something back,” says Awlcraft spokesman Derek
Edwards. “It’s a great opportunity to support one of our most loyal markets
in this recognition of their excellence.”

Windsurfing (IMCO) - ROYAL SUNALLIANCE REGATTA - Days 2,3
Date: Friday, 12 February 1999 22:39
Subject: ROYAL SUNALLIANCE REGATTA - Day 2

MEDIA RELEASE: 12 February

KIWI BOARDSAILORS LEAD THE FLEETS
Royal SunAlliance Regatta (Sail Auckland), Day 2

AUCKLAND: New Zealand€s boardsailing world champs stamped their authority
on their respective fleets today in the Mistral men & women€s division on Day
2 of the Royal SunAlliance Regatta (Sail Auckland) on the Waitemata Harbour.

Barbara Kendall lead the women€s fleet all day today, with friend and
rival Lai Shan LEE (Hong Kong) shadowing Kendall round the track for all three
races. The current world champion was expecting to have trouble with her
forearms, the injury having flared up again.

Says YNZ boardsailing coach Grant Beck, She hurt her arms again at the
National Slalom Champs last week, but amazingly she's fine now. She's
surprised that she's going so well.

Says the Olympic gold medallist of being beaten by Kendall in all three
races, my performance showed lack of training. Barbara is sailing very
consistently and extremely fast downwind.

McIntosh captured top spot from overnight leader Dominic Tidey (GBR).
McIntosh scored two 2nds and a 1st, to create a 8 point margin. Former
World Champion and double Olympic medallist Bruce Kendall said sailing
conditions were great but today was one of those days that make me want to give it all up. Says Kendall, I was struggling with my starts, which was the same problem I had at the world champs this year.

RESULTS: ROYAL SUNALLIANCE REGATTA, Day 2

MISTRAL Men (fleet = 61)
1. Dominic TIDEY (GBR): 3, 2 (5 pts)
2. Aaron McINTOSH (NZL): 5, 1 (6pts)
3. Tony PHILIP (FIJ): 2, 5 (7 pts)

MISTRAL Women (fleet = 17)

1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals (NZ) Day #4 (Final)
Subject : 1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals _________________________________.

Day #4, Lyttleton Harbour, Christchurch

The 1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals wound up today with another thrilling day’s racing. Eleven races, the maximum permissible for a regatta, have now been completed with defending national champion, Hamish Bayly from Christchurch coming through as the victor for the third time in his career.

Day #4 certainly proved to be the most dramatic day yet! Sailors arrived at the event site this morning keen to get racing underway in the windiest conditions of the competition. No one was more keen than Taranaki man Neil Piebenga, known to thrive in the fresher conditions, lying in second position behind Bayly after the completion of day #3.

Race #1 of the day saw sailors leaving the beach in a 16 knot breeze which soon built to 20. Piebenga rocketed off the start line totally dominating the race from start to finish. "These are just my kind of conditions – I couldn’t have wished for a better day". Bayly finished a distant second place followed by Aaron Smith from Nelson.

With the wind constantly building, sailors, some exhausted from three physically demanding days were summonsed for the commencement of Race #2. In 22 knots of wind with gusts over 25 a fairly diminished fleet watched the familiar sight of Piebenga, loving the conditions, disappear over the horizon. Aaron Smith came back later in the race pushing Piebenga all the way to the finishing line to take second place, his best result of the 1999 Nationals.

Bayly, who appeared to be struggling in the stronger wind was forced to retire after a horrific crash while reaching speeds of well over 30knots.

As a result of Piebenga’s two wins and Bayly’s retirement from Race #2 a very interesting story was transpiring on the points table. After 10 races of the 11 scheduled, Bayly and Piebenga were on equal points. The National Championship title would go to the person who would win Race #11.

With the wind still building race officers, following rules surrounding wind strength, made the call to switch from Course Racing to Slalom Racing. This sent

competitors scurrying for smaller boards and sails purposely designed for this
spectacular and fastest of all style of windsurf racing.

Sailors were drawn into seven heats and a tennis style elimination programme commenced.

Piebenga and Bayly both cruised through their respective heats. With Piebenga’s very tall and muscular stature enabling him to generate a huge amount of speed in this drag race style Slalom discipline, he was certainly the hot favourite to take the title.

With both the defender and the challenger reaching the 8 man final, tension mounted. As the start gun went off and competitors charged over the line at speeds of 35 knots, with Piebenga in the leading bunch, spectators were horrified to see race officials calling the competitors back to re-start as someone had crossed the line early resulting in immediate disqualification. In fact three competitors were thrown out including Piebenga. The National title was decided at that moment with Bayly taking the honours.

Race #11 was re-started with Smith taking the honours followed by and overjoyed Bayly, on equal points with Piebenga but winning on count-back.

"I’m in heaven having won two years in a row, I’m absolutely rapt – it’s been a really tough four days both physically and mentally".

Barbara Kendall continued to dominate the woman’s fleet on Day #4 adding the 1999 National title to her collection – Kendall has one every year she has been available to compete since 1985.

The perfect wind conditions, a very competitive fleet combined with smooth on water race management have made the 1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals the most successful in the history of the sport in New Zealand.

Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals Day #3
Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals
Day #3 : Lyttleton Harbour, Christchurch

Racing was delayed today until approximately 2pm when finally the Lyttleton Harbour seabreeze kicked in.

Two races were completed in a shifting breeze of 10 to 15 knots. Big sails and fins were the call of the day to maximise power and speed.

Defending National Champion, Hamish Bayly of Christchurch was the form horse today with two convincing wins over challenger Neil Piebenga from Taranaki. Piebenga’s phenomenal board speed over the first two days wasn’t quite as convincing in today’s lighter conditions making the job for Bayly easier.

Although comfortably placed in third position overall, Nelsonian Aaron Smith struggled today in the lighter conditions completing the day with a 4th and 5th place.

A huge day today for Olympic Class World Champion Aaron McIntosh, revelling in the flukey winds, McIntosh finished with two third places which pushes him up to 6th place overall and really challenging fourth and fifth place holders Shane Bright of Auckland and James Dinnis of Taranaki.

Barbara Kendall continued to dominate the woman’s fleet with two convincing wins. Kendall now sits in 13th position overall including the men – an unbelievable feat.

With 8 of the 11 scheduled races now complete, the Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals continue tomorrow with the promise of further ideal conditions.

1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals
Day #2 : Lyttleton Harbour, Christchurch

Another brilliant day of racing on the Lyttleton Harbour today. Three races completed in a breeze of 15 knots which built to a solid 25 knots by the afternoon.

There’s no denying it, Lyttleton Harbour is certainly turning it on for the 1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals. Competitors are absolutely exhausted after completing 6 of a maximum of 11 races in just 2 days of the scheduled 5 day contest.

The top four sailors really put some distance between themselves and the rest of the fleet on the points table today.

Neil Piebenga from Taranaki made a strong challenge for the National title today with a second place in the first race today and two first places in the afternoon races. Piebenga continues to show incredible speed through his aggressive, powerhouse technique.

This huge speed advantage allows Piebenga to be conservative on the start line avoiding potential collisions and the risk of being over the start line before the starting gun which results in an immediate disqualification.

Defending National Champion Hamish Bayly from Christchurch finished with a 1st, 2nd and a 4th today which leaves him on equal points overall with Piebenga.

Tomorrow will be crucial day for both of these competitors.

Mr Consistent Aaron Smith from Nelson proved yesterday’s performance was no fluke with three third places today. This leaves Aaron in a strong position to take 3rd place overall which is a solid improvement over his last year’s position of 5th overall.

A potential upset for Smith could be in the form of veteran sailor James Dinnis, training partner of Piebenga and fellow Taranaki man. Dinnis finished the first two races today in fourth place then really found some form in the last race, revelling in the windy conditions finishing second to Piebenga.

World Olympic Class champion, Aaron McIntosh, competing out of his normal discipline had another good day although struggled a little in the fresher conditions. “The conditions today were pretty challenging - although I’m really enjoying this break in my Olympic class training schedule”.

Treating this as a fun event and a nice rest from a tough build up to the Olympic trials in March 2000 McIntosh is know doubt conserving his strength for a major Olympic Class regatta in Auckland the day following the completion of this National Championship event.

Barbara Kendall, who will also be a starter in the Auckland regatta had another huge day cleaning up the woman’s fleet and upsetting a large number very talented, larger and stronger men.

“This type of racing is quite different for me, it’s far more based on pure strength and power whereas the Olympic class requires greater demand on cardiovascular endurance and sailing tactics”.

The 1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals continues tomorrow with a strong prospect of the completion of three more races.

Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals NZ - Day 1
Subject : Eta Naturals Windsurfing Nationals ____________________________________________________
Day #1, Lyttleton Harbour, Christchurch.

An unbelievably successful start to the glamour event of the 1999 New Zealand windsurfing calendar!

70 competitors were greeted with clear blue skies and a gentle easterly breeze at the 9am briefing. By midday the breeze was sufficiently strong to get the first race underway. No surprises here, reigning National Champion, Hamish Bayly from Christchurch led from start to finish in the difficult 12 knot breeze. Neil Piebenga from Taranaki, after a bad start, showed astonishing speed to catch up to second place closely followed by Aaron Smith from Nelson. Barbara Kendall dominated the woman's fleet with a convincing victory beaten only by seven men!

By the start of Race Two at 2pm, the famous Lyttleton sea-breeze had built to a perfect 18 knots. Piebenga totally dominated this race with a serious speed edge over other competitors winning by a comfortable margin over Bayly and Smith.
Piebenga says "I'm really happy with my speed and am feeling pretty confident for the next few days"

Race #3, raced in identical conditions as Race #2 saw Bayly take the honours after Piebenga had an unplanned confrontation with a Lyttleton Harbour tug boat! Very consistent Nelsonian, Aaron Smith took out second place closely followed by Shayne Bright (husband of Barbara Kendall) in third place.

Barbara Kendall continued to dominate the woman's fleet in Race #2 and #3.

Moving and shaking is Olympic class World Champion Aaron McIntosh. Really only expecting to just squeak into the top 10, McIntosh is astonishing his peers with his form on equipment which is very unfamiliar to him. A sixth and fifth position (accompanied by an unfortunate disqualification in Race #2) put him in a very strong challenging position. "I'm rapt with my performance so far, it's great to be able to mix it with the top guys in a another windsurfing discipline".

The forecast for Day #2 of the 1999 Eta Naturals Windsurfing National Championships looks fantastic – more close racing is sure thing in a fleet which is probably the most competitive ever gathered in New Zealand. A single mistake can easily drop a mid-fleet competitor from 25th to 35th position.

rankings.

Neil Pryde has lost most of his top people in the deal. Matt Pritchard,
Kevin Pritchard, Scott Fenton , Phil Mc Gain, and sail designer Barry
Spanier. The five, now known as 'The Team', are proud to announce their
association with Gaastra Sails Ltd. effective immediately. The Team has
signed a two year deal to 'promote , develop, race , and win'. Gaastra
marketing director, Laurence Mead, explained yesterday , " It's a very
exciting move for us to be able to work with the best development group in
the world and have access to to state of the art technology. We're
confident this will ensure continued success with our Total Flow program,
as with all our other products."

Pryde's response to the buyout is that " they will take a position of
'participation' in the future, instead of 'domination'."

THE GAMBLE

The departure of Barry Spanier from Neil Pryde is a landmark move in
itself. He's been a creative leader for Neil Pryde over the past sixteen
years and designed all of Bjorn Dunkerbeck's world championship winning
sails for the past ten years! Barry is undoubtedly known as one of the
very best sailmakers at work today, and has enormous credibilty around the
world. The new question is, will Dunkerbeck continue as Champion behind the
efforts of his new development group?.

Spanier explains ;
"The past several seasons have been uncomfortable due to internal
conflict. With Phil as Head Tester, we were given responsibility for the
development of the compnay's race sails. This went relatively unnoticed
until these same guys started to overtake Dunkerbeck on the race course.
Internal pressures rose to a point where something had to go .. and it was
The Team"

The opportunity has particular significance for Gaastra since they saw
their own market leadership diminish shortly after Dunkerbeck (Neil Pryde)
defeated Naish( then a Gaastra sailor) eleven years ago.

"It will be a race of epic proportions, both on and off the water", Mead
added, "but the real winner will be the sport of windsurfing."

THE TEAM : A NEW PHILOSOPHY.

The Team achieves success through a special mix of talent , youth ,
experience , dedication, and above all, Teamwork. The knowledge that in the
shared experience of training and practice, all of the members will become
more competitive and can find satisfaction in the success of any of them,
is a novel way to approach what has up till now been a most individual
game..

Phil McGain, at 35 years of age, still has what it takes to dominate his
younger competition in the racing discipline. He has finished fourth two
years in a row, and narrowly missed the German Word Cup racing title in
Sylt this year. "Working as a team is the reason we are all there together
at the top."

Scott Fenton has consistently improved his standings since joining the
group." Being part of the commitment and preparation can only continue to
pay off in top results," said the young Kiwi. Finishing third and fifth
overall in '97 and '98, Scott is looking forward to the new season and his
chance to win the whole pie.

Matt Pritchard finished '97 in fourth behind Scott, but moved to third this
year. He was second in the Indoor and second in Freestyle, a true
multi-discipline master of the sport.

Kevin Pritchard moved from fifth to second this year and has the overall
title in his sights. Just 0.3 of a point separated him from taking the
crown away from Bjorn Dunkerbeck and ending a decade of dominance.

"It was the closest year that I can remember since I have been doing
this." Dunkerbeck said in his world championship acceptance speech. .
With The Team' members in second, third, and fifth overall, the stage is
set for the biggest showdown since Bjorn took the title from Robby Naish
in 1988.

Barry Spanier summed it up: "The sport has been thrown onto a tidal wave
of excitement that is set to revive windsurfing at its very core."

Matt Pritchard added "Sure, participation's important. We all want more
windsurfers, But World Cup victory is still in every company's plan. Every
windsurfer aspires to experience the equipment advances we develop at the
top end of the sport, and the World Cup is still the pinnacle of
achievement and the testing ground for ideas and products that end up on
the market. Every brand wants to be the best. The Team is committed to
bring that to Gaastra Sails.'.
..
The Team and Gaastra Sails stand on the verge of the World Championship.

The world is watching.

Scott Fenton wins the first Indoor Extreme Jump contest
Via IFCA...
The 1998 Paris Delichoc Technowave
10th October
Stade de France, Paris

Scott Fenton wins the first Indoor Extreme Jump contest
An entirely new concept in ‘indoor’ windsurfing was debuted in Paris this weekend. The indoor windsurfing discipline which was first performed in France’s capital city nearly 10 years ago took an entirely new format as the racing discipline was discarded to be replaced by a custom made ramp, pool, fans accompanied by of some of the world’s top Techno DJ’s.

The location for the extreme jump was incredible, the sense of national pride surrounding the brand new Stade de France, location of France’s historic World Cup Soccer victory is immense. The world’s top windsurfers arrived in this magical venue to perform for the crowds. World number 3* Scott Fenton, America’s Matt Pritchard, Wildman Robert Teriitehau, Showman Eric Thieme, Multiple World Champion Nathalie LeLievre, French national champion Antoine Albeau and many more teamed with Sash, Mousse
T, DJ Fred and Arnold T to create a highly charged mix of jump action and dance music. Eric Thieme,
famous for his outrageous wetsuits again thrilled the crowd, arriving on-stage dressed in a wetsuit version of the French national soccer strip ! A special mention should go to Italy’s Matteo Bof, better known by windsurfers as I33, Matteo has a rapidly developing music career with Italian band ‘Bof’. Matteo played live before his largest ever audience, nearly 20,000 fans in the half-time interval.

The pool was a completely new concept, sailors launched into the water, directly from the DJ’s booth to begin a 70m run-up in a specially deigned pool, just 10m wide. As sailors hit the indoor jump ramp, they moved up into the wind from 6 especially raised fans, designed to keep sailors ‘powered up’ through the jump, allowing increased rotation and a whole new realm of possibilities before sailors land in a deepened 20 x 20m splash pool.

A field of 12 top windsurfers took part in the first half of the show, as each sailor had 3 qualification jumps to make the top 6 for the show final. The new format and jump ramp made for incredible performances as sailors performed huge forwards, table tops and spectacular back loops. French stars Antoine Albeau and Thierry Belbeoc’h fond themselves inspired by the huge crowd and atmosphere in the national stadium and both sailors excelled. Albeau, who is not known for his indoor jump results put on an incredible performance landing back-loops cleanly to qualify for the final 6 in the second half of the show.
However, the show would belong to three sailors, Kiwi Scott Fenton and American Matt Pritchard and Stephane Etienne. The crowd took an immediate liking to the bright blue mo-hawked New-Zealander who revelled in the electric atmosphere and took nearly 10 minutes to return to the pits after each jump, spending time signing autographs and greeting the thousands of super-enthusiastic fans. Fenton, Pritchard and Etienne enthralled the crowd with truly ‘extreme’ jumping. The top three could not decide the contest winner until the very last jump. Matt Pritchard’s final jump sent the crowd wild as he became only the second ever sailor to perform an indoor ‘push loop’, a move only ever performed successfully by
his great friend and rival, Scott Fenton. Pritchard’s performed the rotation perfectly but was unable to land with the precision he would have liked and missed out on victory by just a few points. Leaving Fenton to take the victory with Pritchard and Etienne as runner-up.

The overwhelming impression of the show was a complete success, the artists who played found themselves amazed by the super-enthusiastic crowd who spent almost the entire show on their feet, cheering waving, or performing mexican waves !

The Extreme jump concept has proved itself as a fantastic new concept and format for the indoor windsurf discipline ... watch out for the new show at a european capitol near you soon !!

Luke Wigglesworth in the 17th Auckland to Russell Yacht Race
The Coastal Classic
17th Auckland to Russell Yacht Race
23 October 1998

Luke Wigglesworth of Auckland will again be at the start line for the 17th
Auckland to Russell Yacht Race, the only difference between him and the rest
of the fleet is that he will be on a windsurfer, not a yacht. Although Luke
is not allowed to enter the event officially, he caused a stir last year by
leading the fleet all the way to Home Point, 10 Miles short of Cape Brett.

After finishing the 126 nautical mile trip last year in 11 Hours 45 minutes,
Luke is hoping to beat all the yachts home to Russell this time. Only two
monohulls passed him near the finish last year. His windsurfer is only 10
foot long compared with the 40 foot multihulls in the race, but in good
conditions has averaged 25 knots per hour with a top speed of 32 knots (Just
over 50 km per hour).
In this record-breaking attempt, Luke will be accompanied by the tender boat
used by KZ 7 in the America's Cup at Fremantle in 1987.

Luke will be at the Tamaki Yacht Club from the 8.00 am on Friday morning
with a start at 10.00 am.

Please phone Luke Wigglesworth on 021 2142404 if you're interested in any
more details.

Eta National Windsurfing Speed Week
The Eta Naturals Speed Week 98 (Windsurfing New Zealand Speed Sailing Nationals) is an exciting event which provides not only great competition for sailors but also spectacular action and "crashes". Following the format of the PWA/IYRU Speed Racing, regattas like this in Europe have had far more appeal than other forms of yachting.
With this being the first windsurfing event for the season, New Zealand’s 30 fastest sailors will be racing at speed over 75 km/ph attempting to win the overall title.
The event runs for nine days from the third of October and will be based at the Mangawhai Surf Club ( 20 minutes drive north of Wellsford)

THE 1998 PWA ATATURK WORLD INDOOR CUP, 22-23rd April 1998
The PWA Indoor World
Tour moved on to Istanbul this week for the first PWA event ever to be held
in Turkey. Staged in front of the Zeytinburnu or literally'Olive Nose' Castle
, East met West in a dynamic blend. The event was only the second ever
outdoor-indoor and the 90 metre pool, 2.5 million litres of water and 30
turbine fans, were contrasted by the historic setting and loud Turkish music.
Being able to move the fans and pool outdoors has brought indoor windsurfing
to a whole new audience and the Turkish spectators truly enjoyed the
visit.

Many top names in windsurfing were present for the Turkish
outdoor-indoor event. World Champion Nik Baker (K-66) arrived here to defend
his PWA World Indoor title from the mohawked New Zealander Scott Fenton
(KZ-1), ranked 3rd in the world. Also highly ranked are American Matt
Pritchard (US-93), Spanish jump specialist Eduardo Bellini (E-9) and wildman
Robert Teriitheau (F-2000) from France, who never ceases to surprise. In the
women's fleet, the two top contenders were Nathalie LeLievre (F-12) the
multiple world champion from France and her arch-rival Karin Jaggi (Z-14)
from Switzerland.

Slalom
The day 1 race victory was taken by K-66, England's
Nik Baker, the PWA Indoor world champion, who had eliminated KZ-1 Scott
Fenton, F-808 Eric Thieme and F-2000 Robert Teriitehau on his way to the
final. Baker's super-final opponent was American Matt Pritchard US-93 who,
after finishing runner-up to Baker in the timing trials had knocked-out
Eduardo Bellini E-9, I-0 Andrea Rosati and E-66 Stephane Etienne to meet
Baker. The second day featured a very competitive gybing duel between Bellini
and Pritchard. Although Matt Pritchard fought hard and tried every trick he
knew, he was unable to defeat Bellini who took the second elimination
victory.

Jump
The jump event had joint winners, K-66 Nik Baker and F-808 Eric
Thieme. It was Eric Thieme who took the first event victory ahead of K-66 Nik
Baker and US-93 Matt Pritchard. Pritchard took the first round lead ahead of
Baker and well clear of Fenton and Bouldoires in equal 3rd. Whilst a poor
table-top on his second jump saw Matt drop to third position. On his third
and final jump he pulled off another high, dry landed forward loop which saw
Matt move back to second position. However, there was nothing Matt could do
to catch Baker whose consistently high-scoring jumps had given him a safe
position. In the second jump event, it was Baker who took a the victory ahead
of EricThieme and E-66 Stephane Etienne. Baker 's victory came after a
succession of hi, dry landed forward loops and table tops. Baker even felt
confident enough to attempt a push loop laterin the show when he had reached
a position of being mathematically unbeatable! The overall victory was taken
by K-66 Nik Baker from England ahead of US-93 Matt Pritchard and E-9 Eduardo
Bellini.

Next up...........
The PWA World Tour now moves on to Austria for a
brand new discipline, the first ever Freestyle event. Freestyle is another
windsurfing discipline which will bring World Windsurfing champions and
heroes closer to the public as they demonstrate jumps gybes and tricks on the
Austrian lake of Neusiedl between 25 April and 02 May.
